The Story Behind this Blog

Being from the South, Silver is a very big part of my life. It doesn't have anything to do with wealth. Although those with more money - old money, tend to have more of it. New money tend not to spend their money on Silver. They do not have the appreciation for the warmth of the metal, the beauty of the patina, the story it tells of the generations past who have used it. A true southern girl comes of age when she chooses her silver pattern, long before she chooses her mate. If she is smart, she chooses that of her mother, grandmother, or favorite great aunt who in their benevolence will pass their silver on to her. It is the pieces in those sets, the pieces on our tables, along with the pieces we find in the corners of the displays in antique stores that prompted me to start this blog. They are beautiful, they are odd, but what are they, and what in the hell do you do with them?

Avalon by International

International's Avalon pattern dates back to 1900 and was designed by Samuel Stohr. Stohr also designed Pansy (1909) for International and Chesterfield (1914).

Terrapin Forks Part 3

One of the more exotic pieces, the Terrapin Fork, like its mate the Terrapin Spoon, were designed for eating terrapin and terrapin soup, both luxuries in the Victorian and Edwardian times.

Saratoga Chip Server (Part 3)

The Saratoga Chip Server is a curious piece that I have posted on earlier. Developed to serve the "new fangled" snack potato chips, the piece is actually a lovely ornate piece that is only found in the older patterns. Here are some more examples.

A Nut server or Nut Scoop comes in two sizes the regular Nut spoon is 4 to 5 inches long, while the Master Nut Server, or Master Nut spoon, shown here is much bigger, 7 to  9 inches long. It is an ornate piece with a pierced bowl.

Hooded Asparagus Servers

Of the different types of Asparagus Servers - Tongs, Individual (I posted on earlier), and "Servers". There are two types of "Servers" - Servers (I posted on earlier) and Hooded Servers. Here are some examples of Hooded Asparagus Servers. A majority of these pieces (I have yet to find one that is not) are hollow handled, therefore the true difference is in the blade (or shelf) itself.

Bonbon Scoop (Part 2)

While not nearly as lavish as their cousins the Bonbon Spoons, the Bonbon Scoop is still a pretty piece, with a shovel shaped bowl (in most cases). Leave it to the Victorians to have several utensils for one food item (of course candies was one of their weaknesses!). Besides the Spoon and Scoop there are Tongs. I posted earlier on different bonbon pieces.

Terrapin Fork (Part 2)

Earlier this year, I showed 2 examples of Terrapin Forks. I have found several more fine examples of this truly unique place piece. In a way, it resembles the "spork" design of an ice cream fork. However, usually the designs have more details.
