I posted on the Pastry Server many years ago . Here I revisit it again because it is a lovely (and expensive) serving piece should you find yourself with one.

Not to be confused with the Charles II pattern by Dominick and Haff I posted on earlier, this Charles II pattern was introduced by Lunt in 1934. And, unlike the other pattern which was designed by Gilbert Crowell, Frederick W. Koonz designed Lunt's pattern. Koonz also designed American Victorian and Modern Victorian for Lunt.

The design of this pattern consists of fruits and flowers at the base of the terminal and the top of stem. The terminal has an open area suitable for engraving. The embellishment at the bottom of the stem and on the shoulder is elegant and substantial. This is truly a beautiful pattern.

Charles II by Dominick and Haff

Charles II was designed by Gilbert L. Crowell, Jr. and introduced by Dominick and Haff in 1894. A traditional pattern, Charles II has a scallop shell pattern fanned on the terminal, a leaf motif at the bottom of the terminal, a plain stem, and a small flourish on the terminal. Each piece is edged with a thick bead. There are patterns by Lunt and Tuttled also named "Charles II" but their designs are very different.

Ice Cream Server

And, one more serving piece to add to the silver chest, the Ice Cream Server. Most patterns, that have one Ice Cream Server, tend to have it in two sizes, a large and a small.

Four O'Clock Spoon

The Four O'Clock Spoon runs in length from 4 3/4 to 5 3/8. It is shorter in length than the Five O'Clock spoon at 5 to 5 5/8 inches and much shorter than the place teaspoon, usually 5 7/8 to slightly over 6 inches. It is longer than the Demitasse spoon which is usually 3 3/4 inches to 4 1/2 inches. You may be able to tell a Demitasse from a Five O'Clock spoon, but without seeing all four laid out together, it could be confusing. I imagine many people are using Four O'clock spoons thinking they are place teaspoons. Oh, and to confuse matters there is the Desert spoon, but since it ranges from 6 7/8 to 8 inches, chances are it will not get confused in the mix.

This spoon is designed to be used when coffee (or tea) is served in the late afternoon. You will find them in many of the older patterns.

Mayonnaise Ladle

A year or two ago, I posted a list of the different types of ladles one can find in sterling patterns. This is the Mayonnaise ladle which tend to be 4 1/2 to be 5 1/2 inches long (with one or two being 7 or 8 inches).
