The Story Behind this Blog

Being from the South, Silver is a very big part of my life. It doesn't have anything to do with wealth. Although those with more money - old money, tend to have more of it. New money tend not to spend their money on Silver. They do not have the appreciation for the warmth of the metal, the beauty of the patina, the story it tells of the generations past who have used it. A true southern girl comes of age when she chooses her silver pattern, long before she chooses her mate. If she is smart, she chooses that of her mother, grandmother, or favorite great aunt who in their benevolence will pass their silver on to her. It is the pieces in those sets, the pieces on our tables, along with the pieces we find in the corners of the displays in antique stores that prompted me to start this blog. They are beautiful, they are odd, but what are they, and what in the hell do you do with them?

Cambridge Gold by Old Newbury

A pattern by a little known company, Old Newbury, Cambridge Gold dates back to only 1976 (relatively new for a sterling pattern).

Chow Chow Spoons Part 2

A while back I posted about Chow Chow Spoons. Chow Chow is a condiment made from green tomatoes, cabbage, mustard seed, and some type of hot pepper. Here are some more examples of these spoons.

Old Newbury by Towle

Towle's Old Newbury was introduced in 1900. It is a fairly simple pattern at first glance, but then look again and there are many subtle details.

Pierced Nut Spoon (Part 3)

Still one of the fanciest pieces in any set, the Pierced Nut Spoon is very similar to the Bon Bon Spoon. I have posted on these earlier. There are two distinct sizes. The smaller size I think is what some patterns refer to as an "Almond Spoon", although I have no reference to back that up. Some patterns show two sizes and refer to both of them as "Pierced Nut Spoons", some only show one size, and some show a larger "Pierced Nut Spoon" then a smaller "Almond" spoon or scoop (although the later does not resemble a scoop at all).

Lobster Forks Part 3

Several years ago I posted on Lobster Forks. I recently found two more examples of these pieces. They are not found in many patterns. I have seen examples of them in patterns by Durgin, Alvin, Tiffany, and Reed and Barton.

Pitcher Spoon - Large

Being called the Pitcher Spoon, I am only assuming this served the obvious purpose of stirring drinks (ie tea or lemonade) in a pitcher. They also come in a smaller size, although I could only find a few examples of those. Some patterns had round bowls and some had oval bowls.

Master Pierced Nut Server

A Nut server or Nut Scoop comes in two sizes the regular Nut spoon is 4 to 5 inches long, while the Master Nut Server, or Master Nut spoon, shown here is much bigger, 7 to  9 inches long. It is an ornate piece with a pierced bowl.

Old Style Salad Fork

I honestly cannot tell any difference, short of the name, between the Old Style Salad Fork and the regular Salad Fork. Some of the old style have three tines, some have four. The length is comparable. They are not found in many patterns. Old Newbury by Towle actually has two sizes of the Old Style Salad fork (go figure). Whatever the case, here are some examples.

Old Style Salad Fork

The Old Style Salad Fork differs from the regular salad fork in that the shoulders are wider and the styles are a little more decorative. This piece is not found in every pattern.

Toast Server

The Toast Server is similar to some of the other servers (waffle, etc) except the spatula part is longer. The piece itself varies in length from 8 1/2 to as long as 11 1/4 inches. This piece is not found in all patterns.
