Top 50 Most Popular Sterling Flatware Patterns of the 20th Century

Based on the book, Silverware of the 20th Century, the Top 250 Patterns, the following is the list of the top 50 patterns (in alphabetical order). Two caveats here: this is silverware of the 20th century and there were some lovely patterns of the 19th century and this is the First Edition of this book, published in 1997. 

More interesting is that out of these 50 patterns, 2 are stainless (ST) and 5 are silver plate (SP), leaving 43 sterling (SS)

Napkin Clips

We often think of pieces of the sterling patterns being the utensils, the knives and forks, and serving pieces. However, there are many more pieces you may find in a pattern. I find that these are random depending on pattern. and, even more random depending on who bought the original set of sterling.

An example is the Napkin Clip shown here. All formal tables are set with linen or cotton napkins and traditionally they were held by either napkin clips or rings.

Grande Baroque By Wallace

A design by William Warren, said to take 4 years to complete. The top of the piece is an Acanthus leaf and below that is a sophisticated pattern of beautiful flowers and leaves. The forks have narcissus in their design, the knives a rose, and five petaled flowers can be seen on the spoons. His inspiration was the romance of the 16th century. It is one of the patterns called "three dimensional" because the designs can be seen from three sides: the front, back, and from the side.

Lemon Server

The Lemon Server is designed to slide under the lemon slices, pick them up, then serve them. These pieces are rare since they were only produced in a few patterns. Sometimes they can be confused with the croquette server but if you compare the two, you will see the croquette server is flat and the lemon server has a raised edge on one side.

Holiday Pieces

There are several Holiday pieces around. Here are a few sample. I am sure there are more. Then Tiffany has their own holiday sterling pattern - Holly which was introduced in 1895 and has since been discontinued.
