Dinner Fork (8 5/8 inches)
The Story Behind this Blog
Being from the South, Silver is a very big part of my life. It doesn't have anything to do with wealth. Although those with more money - old money, tend to have more of it. New money tend not to spend their money on Silver. They do not have the appreciation for the warmth of the metal, the beauty of the patina, the story it tells of the generations past who have used it. A true southern girl comes of age when she chooses her silver pattern, long before she chooses her mate. If she is smart, she chooses that of her mother, grandmother, or favorite great aunt who in their benevolence will pass their silver on to her. It is the pieces in those sets, the pieces on our tables, along with the pieces we find in the corners of the displays in antique stores that prompted me to start this blog. They are beautiful, they are odd, but what are they, and what in the hell do you do with them?

Repousse by Kirk - Stieff
One of the most elegant patterns in sterling, the pattern that is the flagship of its style Repousse by Kirk Stieff was introduced in 1828. And while there are many that may bear the name and may be similar in design, this is the original one.

Oneida introduced Damask Rose in 1946. It was designed by Grosvenor N. Allen & Mary Parker Fleming. Grosvenor is also credited with the designs of Stanton Hall (1951), Ribbon Rose (1942), and Castle Rose.

Mary Warren by Machester
The things they will name patterns after - Mary Warren was the name of the oldest accuser during the Salem Witch trials in 1692. Perhaps there is another not so "infamous" Mary Warren" that merited a pattern named in her honor, but for now that is all I could find. Manchester's Mary Warren pattern introduced in 1932 is of simple lines, those that normally are equated to colonial times.

Jelly Cake Server (Pierced) (Part 3)
As I posted on this piece earlier, here are some more examples of the Pierced Jelly Cake Server. Most of these are fancy, elaborate servers (often very expensive - as the Old Orange Blossom example here that retails in the $1200 range.)

Fruit Series #1 by Watson
In 1903 Watson introduced its Fruit Series #1. The terminal and stem of each piece was very clearly decorated with the design of a fruit in deep relief. The art work is remarkable. In addition to the samples shown here (Strawberry, Orange, Grape, and Banana) there were also designs of Apple. Blackberry, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Watermelon,

Gorham's Description of Their Pattern The King George
Several years ago I posted on Gorham's King George pattern. Recently I came across a copy of the Gorham Handbook : Sterling Silver Spoons and Forks which is a reproduction of the original such handbook distributed by the Gorham company in 1909. In it they give a description of many of their more popular (and their favorite) patterns.
Their description of "The King George" is:
"From the early Georgian days to the present no style of spoon has been in so universal use in Europe and America as the King George. Originated, as its name suggests, in the early reign of King George III, it was instantly acknowledged a standard and was universally adopted as such. Strong and bold in treatment both in shape and ornamentation and particularly adapted to a bright polish, it attracts and is admired by the popular taste, for a spoon rich and ornate without over-elaboration."

Pierced Nut Spoon (Part 3)
Still one of the fanciest pieces in any set, the Pierced Nut Spoon is very similar to the Bon Bon Spoon. I have posted on these earlier. There are two distinct sizes. The smaller size I think is what some patterns refer to as an "Almond Spoon", although I have no reference to back that up. Some patterns show two sizes and refer to both of them as "Pierced Nut Spoons", some only show one size, and some show a larger "Pierced Nut Spoon" then a smaller "Almond" spoon or scoop (although the later does not resemble a scoop at all).
